MY MEMORIES

1962 - Wisconsin Years I

American Can Company

We moved back into the same apartment in Neenah, Wisconsin, we had rented the summer before. This time we signed a 1-year lease, then we would see what we wanted and where we wanted to live.

The official name of the company was, The Marathon Division of American Can Company. American Can was famous for making cans for food products. The Marathon Division was in the paper business as was the Dixie Division which made among other products the famous Dixie Ice Cream Cups. I knew almost nothing about making any of these products. For that matter before the summer job, I knew nothing about paper making either.

At first the work was pretty much the same as last summer. My boss, Dick Fricton, was the head of the Instrumentation Section of the Central Plant Engineering office. Harold Miller was one of the most influential members of our group. The Office was located on an island in the Fox River that was shared by both Neenah and Menasha. Neenah and Menasha are twin cities and are part of a seven-city grouping called the Fox Cities. All seven cities are border to border along the Fox River, hence the name Fox Cities.
